At last month’s meeting, we unanimously endorsed Josh Shapiro for PA Attorney General and Al Dermovsesian for HD-152. Congratulations to both!

At this month’s meeting on April 7, with such a full agenda, we’ll start by deciding how much time to allot to our endorsement decisions, and how much to reserve for sharing our thoughts about the Democratic Presidential Primary.

* ENDORSEMENT VOTES *
In Montco DFA, only voting members can cast votes. Voting members are those who have validated attendance by signing in at least 2 of our meetings within the previous 6 months. If we do vote to endorse and there are several candidates, we will then choose which one.

On April 7, we will consider the following races:

  • for HD 146:  Joe Ciresi
  • for U.S. Senate:  John Fetterman, Katie McGinty, or Joe Sestak

The Senate race:  Among the many important races this season, Montco DFA’s decision on this Senate race is the most important one that we will decide.

Democrats need to flip 5 seats to Democratic hands currently held by Republicans to make the Senate once again majority Democratic. The ramifications are immense — most recently demonstrated by the Republicans’ obstruction of Obama’s Supreme Court nomination.

Pat Toomey’s U.S. Senate seat is one that our national DFA organization has on its short list, and they use the endorsements by local DFA groups like ours as an important gauge of local DFA member support — one of their major criteria. So Montco DFA’s endorsement can be instrumental in bringing DFA’s considerable support to a candidate who has demonstrated strong progressive values like those held by DFA members.

* DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY *
If we decide to reserve meeting time, we will share our thoughts about the two Democratic Presidential candidates.

Last December, as a grassroots-based organization, DFA polled its members across the country about which Democratic presidential candidate we wanted them to support. The members spoke, and Bernie Sanders won with an unprecedented 87.9% sweep, earning DFA’s vigorous support in the subsequent caucuses and primaries both on the ground and with small donor fundraising.

At the same time, national DFA’s endorsement in no way obligates Montco DFA or any of its members to support Bernie. And as a grassroots organization ourselves, it’s important that we share some of our thoughts about the candidates and this election before our primary on April 26.
